With Fourth of July weekend tapping at our front door, it’s about that time for truly serious striped bass anglers to transition into fishing at night. The weather’s getting hotter, the fish are beginning to settle into their summer time haunts, and the bite is best, undoubtedly, after dark.

Technology Progress Mean That The Fishing Challenges I Had As A Lad Could Not Apply These Days

When I was a youth, buying updated fishing tackle wasn’t easily done. I grew up in a Surrey village, and the high street did not run to a shop specialising in fishing supplies. There was a small department store which had a little sports section which had a tray containing a small selection of floats, ledgers and the occasional rod and reel, but that was about it. There was nowhere to get live bait from, and my mother drew a very hard line at trying to grow my own maggots and my dad was not keen on the garden being excavated in a hunt for worms.

The good news this morning is that my bed doesn’t hate me. I am not certain about the cause of the shoulder soreness still, but the situation with my neck is Cricket Ache caused by falling asleep in front of the telly whilst watching the Ashes and not being able to keep some wakefulness. At least I managed to see the conclusion of the match. It won’t be repeated, I am very much a Test match fan and will not be bothering to remain up for the limited over games. Besides, this is a Friday, in subsequent weeks I’ll be aiming to get an early start at work so that I can slope off in after lunch to go angling.

I read a Twitter conversation the other day between a couple of chaps chatting about dreaming and one of them mentioned the strangeness of having the radio on after the alarm has gone off but you’re not actually awake. That really hit a spark with me, as I recall some smashers I had when I used to have my clock radio and the News was on and I was in that 2nd part of sleep, where you are not really asleep but below that level where you are just coming out to wakefulness. The radio gets into the ears and what they are picking up gets mixed into the dreams and it’s brilliant.

Here we go for a fresh week coming from a marvellous weekend which was greatly enjoyable, none of which involved angling. On Friday evening I went into Birmingham, not something I would naturally do as I get confused in cities being very much the out of town fellow, but I was on a mission to see Big Country at the O2 Academy. The show was brilliant, with Mike Peters standing in for the late, great Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson’s son Jamie on 2nd guitar.
